The Challenge
Canada’s regional airline fly a Bombardier Q400 fleet based in Calgary, Alberta.
Their challenge with this aircraft was the unavailability of height access equipment for that specific model of airplane, especially with top-mounted wings and a consideration for exposed-prop engines and the danger they posed for potentially knocking a mechanic off a standard ladder. They approached SafeSmart Aviation for a solution.
The Solution
SafeSmart Aviation provided a full suite of products that worked together to help WestJet’s technicians and mechanics work closer to the aircraft, and with added fall protection:
* Nacelle stands – designed to be the perfect height, and to slide under the engine housing for work on the engine and around the cowling. Lower portion fits around landing gear so it doesn’t limit access from the top.
* General purpose stand – general in nature, is in very versatile, this was a great custom collaboration between WJ Encore’s Director of Maintenance and SafeSmart Aviation that allows for full engine changes and wing edge work.
* Propeller stands – especially-designed for doing work on propeller components away from the aircraft, on a stable holder at the correct height for aircraft maintenance engineers (AMEs).
The Result
WestJet are so pleased with how these products increases efficiency for all aspects of the Q400s as a combined suite, and are now adding them to their hangar facilities in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
