The Bombardier Q400 Angled Wing Dock is a specialized access solution engineered to support comprehensive and safe maintenance across the wings of the Q400 turboprop aircraft. Designed around the precise contours and servicing requirements of the Q400, this platform delivers exceptional stability, modularity, and technician safety when performing critical tasks on wing structures, control surfaces, and systems housed within the wing.
This dedicated wing access system is essential for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance where technicians must safely reach upper wing surfaces and leading-edge areas. These zones are vital for inspections, repairs, and servicing of components such as fuel system panels, flap tracks, aileron mechanisms, spoilers, and landing gear bay doors. The angled design aligns closely with Q400 wing geometry to maximize usable workspace while reducing gaps and minimizing fall hazards.
The platform is built on configurable modules that bolt together to form the outer platform, allowing teams to adjust the dock layout to suit different maintenance phases and access requirements. This modularity supports ergonomic positioning across any wing section, streamlining workflows and improving efficiency. Treadplate decking is used across all surfaces to provide durability and first-class slip resistance in demanding maintenance environments.
Safety is integrated throughout the design. Removable guardrails allow individual platform sections to be selectively closed off or opened, supporting unobstructed access when panels must be removed or installed directly from the working surface. Lock down pins securely fix the platform in position once docked, ensuring dependable stability during high-activity tasks and repeated tool handling.
Access to the highest points of the wing is managed via an integrated top-of-wing access ladder, providing safe ingress and egress for technicians working at the wing apex. For added versatility, the handrail system can be un-bolted when required for specific tasks, enabling temporary barrier removal while maintaining a controlled and safe working envelope.
The dock is mobilized through a towbar mobile platform system fitted with fixed 200mm castors, enabling smooth movement and accurate positioning around the aircraft. An aiming device that bolts in place assists operators in rapidly aligning and docking the platform to key aircraft reference points, reducing staging time and ensuring optimal wing coverage.
To address the varied heights across the wing surface, the platform is available with angled or stepped heights that account for the Q400 wing taper, helping maintain a level and secure working surface throughout. A step-down center section contours the platform to the wing root area, improving close-in access and maintaining an effective working boundary. Gated sections for movement of goods are also incorporated, supporting safe transfer of tools, parts, and equipment on and off the platform without compromising barrier integrity.
The Q400 Angled Wing Dock is an indispensable tool for airframe upkeep, providing a stable, versatile, and high-quality maintenance environment for inspection, repair, and modification work related to the Q400 wing structure and systems. It elevates safety standards while optimizing aircraft servicing efficiency by ensuring technicians always have secure, ergonomic access to critical wing maintenance zones.
